Marriott’s Elite Luxury Brands Review

Marriott’s Elite Luxury Brands

There are nice hotels. And then there are hotels where being there is part of the occasion. St. Regis, The Luxury Collection and The Ritz-Carlton represent three of Marriott's most elevated ways to travel. But BlkTravel doesn't group them together simply because they're expensive. They give us three different versions of luxury. St. Regis is about service. The Luxury Collection is about place. The Ritz-Carlton is about refinement.

These are the hotels for the trip where the room, lobby, restaurant, service and experience surrounding us are expected to justify the money we're spending. Because at this level, being expensive is the easy part. We want to know whether it actually feels worth it.

The Marriott Experience

This is Marriott when the expectations go up.

The room should be beautiful. The service should be polished. Somebody should know what they're doing before we have to ask three times. And the property itself should contribute something to the trip.

But the experience changes depending on the brand.

At St. Regis, personalized service and traditions like its signature Butler Service are deliberately part of the product. St. Regis Hotels & Resorts The Luxury Collection uses distinctive properties and destinations as its calling card, while The Ritz-Carlton built its reputation around highly attentive service and formal luxury. Ritz-Carlton

For Black travelers, our standard doesn't change because the lobby got more expensive.

Actually?

Our expectations get higher.

We want the beautiful hotel and the comfort to enjoy it.

That's the Marriott Elite Luxury experience we're measuring.

About the Brands

Marriott’s Elite Luxury tier brings together three of the most iconic names in global hospitality: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, and Ritz-Carlton. Each brand represents a different expression of luxury, but all share a commitment to creating unforgettable stays for travelers who expect the very best.

St. Regis is the butlered one. Its identity goes all the way back to the original St. Regis New York, opened by John Jacob Astor IV in 1904 and built around the rituals and social world of America's Gilded Age elite. Even St. Regis today openly celebrates the Astor family's famous exclusive social circle, the “400,” as part of its heritage.

And we shouldn't romanticize that era without understanding it. The luxury-hotel culture that developed during segregation existed in an America where Black travelers could not assume an upscale hotel would even accommodate them. Black travelers eventually needed guides identifying establishments where they could safely sleep, eat and travel.

That's useful history, but we're not staying at St. Regis today to prove we're allowed inside. We're paying for the service. Butler service. Attention. Ritual. Personalization. Somebody remembering the details. At these prices, BlkTravel isn't impressed because somebody opened the door for us. We want to see how well they treat us after we walk through it.

The Luxury Collection is the interesting one. This isn't really about finding the same hotel experience everywhere we go. Marriott describes it as a collection of distinctive hotels that define their destinations.

That can mean historic palaces, landmark city hotels, beach resorts, safari properties and buildings that existed long before anybody attached a Marriott Bonvoy number to them. For BlkTravel, that's the appeal. We came all this way. Give us something that actually feels like we went somewhere. But it also means the individual property matters more here than the logo.

One Luxury Collection hotel may become one of our favorite stays in a destination. Another may simply be an old beautiful building with excellent photography. The brand opens the door. The property still has to earn the recommendation.

The Ritz-Carlton is the classic luxury one. Its American history stretches back to the original Ritz-Carlton Boston, which opened in 1927 and helped establish many of the service conventions Americans came to associate with high-end hotels. Today, the brand still sells that idea of polished service, beautiful surroundings and somebody paying attention to the details. For Black travelers, that's exactly where we judge it hardest. At a Ritz-Carlton, we shouldn't be trying to determine whether somebody thinks we're staying there. We shouldn't be receiving a different level of warmth than the couple beside us. And we definitely shouldn't be spending luxury money while feeling like we need to perform luxury for somebody else's comfort.

We paid. We're staying here. Now give us the Ritz-Carlton experience.

When is the right time?

These brands become easier to choose once we stop asking which one is “best” and ask what kind of luxury the trip needs.

St. Regis: When we want to be taken care of. Honeymoons. Anniversaries. Milestone birthdays. Romantic trips. The vacation where service itself is part of what we're willing to spend money on. If we're paying for luxury because we want somebody else handling the details? St. Regis.

The Luxury Collection: When the destination matters. International trips. Bucket-list destinations. Historic cities. Resorts with a real sense of place. Trips where another glass tower with a beautiful lobby isn't enough. If we're thinking: “We didn't come all this way to stay somewhere we could've stayed back home.”

Start here.

The Ritz Carlton: When we want the classic. Celebrations. Couples trips. Family milestones. Business mixed with pleasure. The weekend where we don't necessarily need the hotel to surprise us. We need it to get luxury right. That's Ritz-Carlton territory.

And that's really the shortcut: Want the service? St. Regis. Want the destination? The Luxury Collection. Want classic luxury? The Ritz-Carlton.
