Our RIU Experience
RIU's strength is that it generally doesn't make us work too hard to enjoy ourselves. At the resorts, we're coming for the familiar all-inclusive formula: eat, drink, swim, find some entertainment, go to the beach and figure out what we're doing tonight. And RIU is particularly interesting for BlkTravel because social energy matters in our rankings.
A beautiful resort can still be boring as hell. We want to know whether there's music around the pool. Whether people actually come downstairs after dinner. Whether the bar has some life. Whether the entertainment feels like something we might actually stay awake for.
That doesn't mean every RIU is a party resort. The experience changes significantly by property and destination. But RIU understands that the resort isn't just where we're sleeping. It's part of the vacation.
And when we want something more polished, RIU Palace moves the experience upscale without abandoning the recognizable RIU formula. RIU Plaza is the exception. There, we're trading the wristband and beach for a city hotel designed to give us somewhere comfortable to come back to after exploring. Same RIU name. Completely different trip.
About the Brands
RIU Hotels & Resorts - This is classic RIU. Big resorts. Pools. Beaches. Food. Drinks. Entertainment. Families at some properties, adults-only experiences at others, and plenty of travelers who didn't fly to the Caribbean to sit silently in the lobby. The biggest appeal is value. We're not expecting every meal to change our lives or every room to redefine luxury. We're looking at how much vacation we're getting for the money. Come for the beach. Stay for everything else.
RIU Palace Hotels - RIU Palace is what happens when we like the RIU formula but want a little more RIU for our money. The experience moves upscale, with a greater emphasis on the look and feel of the property while keeping the convenience of the all-inclusive resort. For couples, celebrations and travelers who want the social advantages of a large resort without choosing RIU's more value-driven option, Palace is often where we'd start. Basically: We still came to have fun. We just upgraded the room.
RIU Plaza Hotels - RIU Plaza is the curveball. Forget the Caribbean all-inclusive for a minute. These are city hotels. The reason we're staying isn't necessarily the hotel itself. We have dinner reservations. Tickets. Meetings. Nightlife. Museums. Shopping. Somewhere else we're supposed to be. That's why Plaza's strength is convenience. RIU Plaza proves the company can work even when there isn't a beach outside. Check in. Drop the bags. Let's go see the city
When is the right time?
Choosing between these three doesn't require a personality test.

RIU Hotels & Resorts: Choose classic RIU when value and fun matter more than having the fanciest resort on the beach. Family vacations, friends trips, group travel and affordable Caribbean or Mexico getaways fit naturally here. We want the all-inclusive without spending the whole travel budget on the all-inclusive.
RIU Palace: Choose Palace for the couples trip, birthday, anniversary, destination wedding or upgraded vacation where we want the RIU experience with a little more polish. Same vacation energy. Nicer version.
RIU Plaza: Choose Plaza when we're going somewhere to actually experience the city. Sightseeing, nightlife, events, business trips and weekend escapes all make sense. The hotel is home base. The destination is the vacation.
