Sandals International Brands Review

SANDALS INTERNATIONAL BRANDS

Most hotel companies organize their brands around price. Economy. Premium. Luxury. Ultra-luxury. Sandals Resorts International gives us a much easier question: Who are we bringing? Because the difference between these experiences isn't simply how much we're spending. It's who the vacation is for. Sandals Resorts is built around couples. Beaches Resorts is built around families. And the company's smaller private island and villa experiences take us in the opposite direction entirely. Fewer people. More privacy. More space. More control over the vacation.

That gives us three remarkably different ways to experience the Caribbean from the same resort company. Couples. Families. Private Escapes. Or, in BlkTravel language: Just us. Bring everybody. Actually... don't bring anybody.

The Sandals Experience:

Sandals is built around one idea: make the Caribbean vacation easy.

The food, drinks, beaches, pools, water sports and entertainment are already handled, which means we can arrive with very little planned and still have a full vacation. Sandals does the same for couples that Beaches does for families, while the private island and villa experiences take that convenience somewhere much quieter and more exclusive.

For Black travelers, though, being in the Caribbean doesn't automatically make something a great Black travel experience. We still care about the music, social energy, service, other guests and whether we feel comfortable being ourselves throughout the property. And Sandals has one interesting challenge: they make it almost too easy to never leave.

Enjoy that. That's part of what we're paying for. But Jamaica isn't Sandals. Saint Lucia isn't Sandals. Curaçao isn't Sandals. The resort should make the Caribbean easier to enjoy, not replace the Caribbean.

About the Brands

The Sandals family gets easier to understand once we stop treating everything under the company like the same all-inclusive vacation.

Sandals Resorts is for the adults. More specifically, couples. Honeymoons, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, or a trip where the only people we're responsible for are each other. The individual resorts range from quiet and romantic to much more social, so choosing the right Sandals matters almost as much as choosing Sandals itself.

Beaches Resorts answers a completely different question: what happens when we're bringing everybody? These resorts are designed around families instead of simply allowing them. Kids, teenagers, parents and grandparents can all have something to do without spending every hour attached to one another. For Black families and multigenerational groups, that's an important distinction.

Private Islands & Villas is where the company goes small. Experiences like Fowl Cay and Rio Chico trade the energy and scale of a traditional resort for villas, privacy and considerably fewer people. This isn't another major Sandals brand, and BlkTravel doesn't pretend it is. We're grouping these smaller experiences together because they serve a clear kind of traveler: the one willing to pay more to be bothered less.

That gives Sandals Resorts International three very different lanes: Sandals says: Just us. Beaches says: Bring everybody. Private Islands & Villas says: Actually... don't bring anybody.

When is the right time?

Sandals Resorts International becomes pretty easy to navigate once we know who's coming and what kind of vacation we're trying to have.

Romance & Honeymoons: Sandals Resorts. If this trip is about the two of us, start here. Honeymoons, anniversaries, destination weddings or simply getting away together are exactly what Sandals is designed around. Just remember that individual resorts have different personalities. Romantic doesn't have to mean quiet.

Family Vacations: Beaches Resorts. When the children are coming, Beaches makes considerably more sense. And when the grandparents, cousins and everybody from the family group chat are coming too, it gets even stronger. The advantage isn't simply being family-friendly. The resort was actually designed for families.

Friends & Group Trips: Choose the Property Carefully. This is where the Sandals name alone isn't enough. Adults-only doesn't automatically mean group-friendly, and some properties have considerably more nightlife and social energy than others. If the crew wants to turn up, we need to rank the resort by what happens after dinner.

Privacy & Seclusion: Private Islands & Villas. Fowl Cay, Rio Chico and similar private experiences make sense when fewer people is actually the objective. Couples, families and small groups can all fit here. We're not paying for more restaurants, bigger crowds or more entertainment. We're paying for everybody else to go away.

The shortcut?

Couple? Sandals. Family? Beaches. Crowd? Pick carefully. Privacy? Go private.
