Backstage Atlanta Review
Backstage earns #6 because a great travel guide shouldn't confuse luxury with quality. There are more expensive venues on this list. There are more fashionable venues. There are certainly rooms with more dramatic interiors. But none of that makes Backstage less important to Atlanta nightlife. Its longevity, entertainment programming and connection to a mature Black audience give it something that can't simply be manufactured with a multimillion-dollar buildout. There is history and community behind the experience.
That makes Backstage particularly valuable to BlkTravel. We're not ranking spaces according to which one photographs best. We're evaluating what kind of experience they deliver and whether that experience is worth knowing about. At #6, Backstage introduces travelers to a side of Atlanta nightlife that deserves to be represented alongside the city's more polished destinations. Backstage is where this ranking takes another turn.
We've already given you polished cocktails, speakeasy luxury, date-night sophistication and some grown-and-sexy Atlanta. Backstage isn't trying to out-luxury any of them. Its strength is something completely different: familiarity. This feels like grown Black Atlanta. The music, crowd and entertainment are rooted in a social scene that existed long before somebody decided every night out needed bottle girls and a neon sign on the wall. Depending on the night, you might find a live band, DJ, karaoke, line dancing, comedy or another event pulling the room together.
And that's important. Backstage isn't just somewhere people happen to gather. The entertainment is part of the experience. For an out-of-town Black traveler, this can be the kind of recommendation that's difficult to find on a traditional Atlanta tourism site. Google can show you what's popular. Instagram can show you what's pretty. Neither necessarily tells you where grown Black folks have actually been going for years. We will.
Backstage may not be the choice when you're looking for the most glamorous room in Atlanta. But when you want music, drinks, dancing and a crowd where you don't have to wonder whether you're going to stick out, it knows exactly what it's doing.
