The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is one of Atlanta's most distinctive cultural institutions, building its exhibitions, collection and scholarship around Black women artists while sitting inside one of America's most important historically Black colleges. There are art museums that occasionally organize an exhibition around Black women. Then there's Spelman. Black women are the point.

The museum has built a national reputation around collecting, presenting and studying work by women of the African Diaspora. Spelman began developing its art collection decades before the museum itself opened in 1996, and its collection now spans generations of important Black artists. And the location matters. You're experiencing this work at Spelman College. Not adjacent to Black history. Inside it.

That means the visit can become considerably larger than a gallery stop. You're inside the Atlanta University Center, surrounded by institutions that have helped educate generations of Black leadership, scholarship and creativity. In 2025, the museum expanded with a second gallery inside Spelman's Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts, giving the institution additional exhibition space. As of fall 2026, its 30th-anniversary exhibition brings together more than 80 works by Black women artists including Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold and Carrie Mae Weems.
