Atlanta can teach you a lot about America if you're willing to listen. This is a city where Black history, civil rights, Southern culture, art, music and modern Atlanta all exist beside each other, and its museums give travelers several very different ways to understand that story. Some are internationally recognized institutions. Others could only exist here.

You can stand inside spaces dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement, explore major collections of art, take the family somewhere built around science and discovery, or walk into the Trap Music Museum and see a piece of Black culture that traditional institutions spent years overlooking being documented on its own terms. BlkTravel isn't going to treat one kind of history as more worthy of preservation than another.

Dr. King's Atlanta matters. The Atlanta University Center matters. Atlanta's art matters. The city's music and hip-hop history matter too. And we're also not making every museum recommendation about race simply because we're a Black travel publication. Sometimes a great museum is just a great museum, and Black travelers deserve a guide that recognizes the full range of things we might actually want to see. Whether you have an hour between plans or want to spend half the day learning something, these are the Atlanta museums worth making room for in the itinerary.
