Cumberland Mall
This is where our ranking starts looking different from everybody else's. You probably expected Phipps. Maybe Ponce. We're giving you Cumberland Mall. And this is where understanding Atlanta matters more than assembling a list of whichever shopping developments look best in tourism photos. Cumberland opened in 1973 as Atlanta's first four-anchor mall and has remained part of metro Atlanta's shopping landscape for more than half a century. Today you'll find Macy's, DICK'S Sporting Goods, Apple, True Religion, Windsor, Vans, American Eagle, ALDO and plenty of smaller fashion, jewelry and accessory stores.
But again, the directory isn't why it's #3. Cumberland has something Ponce City Market can't manufacture: generations. Black Atlantans have been coming over here to shop, meet somebody, eat, walk around and find something to wear for a very long time. That's important to us. Because if we're telling Black travelers where to shop in Atlanta, the answer can't exclusively come from whatever developments became fashionable during the newest version of Atlanta.
Sometimes you want the new Atlanta. Sometimes you want the Atlanta that was already here. Cumberland is still a real mall. You're coming here because you actually want to buy something. Clothes. Shoes. Jewelry. Beauty. Something for the kids. Something for tonight.And being in the Cumberland/Galleria area also puts you near The Battery and Truist Park, while the mall itself sits directly across from Cobb Galleria Centre.
Come shop.

Cumberland isn't #3 because it's Atlanta's third-largest mall or because it has the third-most luxury stores.
It's here because our rankings include cultural relevance.
For generations of Black Atlantans, Cumberland has been part of the city's actual shopping ecosystem especially the North and West Sides of the city. Combine that history with a still-useful retail mix, easy access from Northwest Atlanta and proximity to major visitor areas around Cumberland and The Battery, and we're comfortable putting it above some considerably trendier names.
New doesn't automatically mean more Atlanta.
