Joseph D. McGhee Racquet Center
Joseph D. McGhee Racquet Center gives visiting tennis and pickleball players exactly what we want from this list: a real public facility in Southwest Atlanta where you can reserve court time and actually play rather than simply admire somebody else's country club. Bring the racket. We found you a court. Joseph D. McGhee isn't here because it's Atlanta's flashiest tennis facility. It's here because it solves the problem this entire Sports & Games section was created to solve. You're visiting Atlanta. You play tennis. Where can you actually play?
The City of Atlanta's Joseph McGhee Racquet Center sits at 820 Beecher Court in Southwest Atlanta and operates as part of Atlanta's public racquet-center system. The facility offers reservable court time along with tennis programming, giving visitors an alternative to hunting for an open neighborhood court or trying to gain access to a private club. And this isn't some random pair of courts behind a recreation center. McGhee has been part of the Southwest Atlanta tennis community for decades. The facility was dedicated in 1981 and named for Joseph Daniel McGhee, an Atlanta educator and civic leader who promoted athletics and sponsored tennis competition. That's another reason we like it here.
Traditional Atlanta travel guides spend most of their time directing visitors toward the same few neighborhoods. BlkTravel can say: Come play tennis in Southwest Atlanta. Reserve your time. Meet your partner there. Play your sets. And if pickleball is your game instead, McGhee provides that lane too. No sightseeing required. The activity is the attraction.

Because it passes our most important test:
Can a traveler realistically use it? Yes. It's public.
Court reservations are available.
You don't need to belong to an Atlanta country club.
And it introduces travelers to a recreational facility in a predominantly Black side of Atlanta that conventional vacation guides have very little reason to tell them exists.
We do.
