Six Flags Over Georgia is metro Atlanta's major traditional amusement park, delivering roller coasters, family rides and enough attractions to turn one ticket into an entire day of family entertainment. Georgia Aquarium may be the better attraction overall. But ask the kids whether they want to look at a shark or get on Goliath. Now we have a discussion.

Six Flags is the pick when the family wants action. This is roller coasters, screaming, walking all day, somebody getting scared once they reach the front of the line, overpriced snacks, family arguments about what we're riding next and memories everybody will still talk about later. In other words: A theme park day.

And for generations of Black families in Atlanta, Six Flags isn't some distant tourist attraction. It's part of growing up here. Summer trips, school outings, church groups and family days have made the park familiar territory across metro Atlanta. Give it the day. Wear comfortable shoes. Check ride requirements before promising younger kids they can ride something, and don't build another major attraction into the same itinerary. If it’s summer time, you will be hot. Just know this.
