Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam is the oldest and largest Islamic community in metro Atlanta, rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah and connected to the legacy and leadership tradition of Imam W. Deen Mohammed. Black Atlanta's spiritual story doesn't begin and end with the Black church. And this page shouldn't pretend that it does.

Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam gives us the opportunity to introduce travelers to another important piece of Black religious life in the city. Located in historic East Atlanta, the community identifies itself as metro Atlanta's oldest and largest Islamic community and is associated with the leadership and vision of Imam W. Deen Mohammed. Four generations of Muslims currently support the community. That's significant.

The history of Islam within Black America is its own deep American story, and Atlanta has an active community carrying that tradition forward. The masjid is led by Resident Imam Sulaimaan Hamed, who has studied Arabic and Islamic sciences both in the United States and abroad and has taught at Mohammed Schools and through Atlanta's Faith Institute. For Muslim travelers, this isn't primarily a historical attraction. It's somewhere to pray.
